Chet Tomkins passed away

I got word this morning that my old fishing partner and dear friend passed away Oct 11.

You guys will remember I sold a bunch of his stuff for him last spring. Spence has on of his rods, Kevin (1dozenraw) has one also. Bart has a bunch of his fly tying material.

Chet was about 5' 4" and 110#. I saw him get knock down at Deep Hole 3 times one night when he was in his 70s. Never stopped fishing for a minute.

Great surf fisherman and a conservationist before it was fashionable. I remember how all his plugs had one single Siwash hook with a filed barb so he wouldn't hurt the fish.

Rest in peace my dear friend.

No boat, back in the suds.

Sorry to hear that too. Sounds like a great friend and fine fisherman. Glad I have one of his rods.

Thanks guys. It means a lot to me.

Chet was one of the "Old Guard" I met on the beach one night 30 years ago. We formed a bond that lasted over 30 years and, even in his last years when he couldn't fish anymore he would call or write me and ask how the bite was.

No boat, back in the suds.

I used to run into him from time to time late at night on some of my trips down there. Good guy. He'll be missed. Hope there's another Deep Hole for him to fish

Sorry for your loss Paul,
and may he R.I.P.

I think I met him one night (based on your description).
Do you recall a story about him fishing the hole with some
herring (or other bait) tied to his belt when the shark fins popped
up?

Actually what happened was he had some bluefish on his stringer and a "log" kept bumping his leg. After a few minutes of kicking the log away he reached down and it was a shark feeding on the bluefish.

You probably did meet him Christian.

No boat, back in the suds.

Thanks Bryan. I have one of his very old plugs I'd like you to have. Maybe coffee next week if you are off. I'll meet you half way.
