Forget the 50's - a 61 from Rhody?
Quote:
just got word from a trusted source of a 61# caught by a 13 year old kid up in Rhode Island. Boat fish, but caught about 100' from shore.
Fish was only 49" in length but had a 34" girth.
|
The original author of this post might be around these parts, but I just couldn't help posting this. Stay tuned for confirmations...13yrs old and 61#...wow, how will this kid ever fish again for stripers? How do you out do 61#'s?!? LOL - wish I had that problem.

Hahahaha, the time of the beginning of our puberty. And a full of dorky and embarassing memories of our pre-adolescence.... I remembered how my father tried to teach me about sex education...It was very hilarious and he got pissed.

Just got back from Ericksons B&T where the owner told me to check the cooler. I know he wouldn't if there was anything less than a 50 in it. He asked me to guess the weight so I picked it up and it was freakin' HUGE. Biggest bass I've ever lifted I guessed 50 long by 33 girth and 58 pounds - well it went 49x34 and 61. Well, a thirteen year old kid caught a 61 pound bass within 100 feet of shore - incredible....

It does sound a little short for its weight...but not impossible:
http://www.stripersurf.com/ageweight.html
My 58#'er was 53" long....it "should have" weighed 68# from the chart. I would rather have an overweight fish then a starving one.

I think those old charts considered fork length instead of overall.
Using the Girth x Girth x Lenght / 800 method shows the fish at 70#s so for it to be 61 is certainly reasonable. I lifted this fish myself and can attest to it's size...

I wonder if its the 66 I heard about, and its just gained a few lbs in the news traveling? That kid is ruined for life now, unless he starts fishing for shark or tuna. Killer catch though

Measurements don't surprise me......
Most of the giants are always going to be abnormal fish.
Think about it....if you're an alien fishing for big humans with cheeseburgers as bait, you're not going to win the tournament catching the 35 year old guy who might still go to the gym a few times a week and buys his cloths off the rack at the department store. You're going to win catching the obscenely huge slob who buys his cloths from some obscure website for abnormally large people.
Same goes for stripers......the really big ones will rarely have the same proportions as the overall sample size.
