Just heard on BBC radio...
A study on sleep deprivation. The study proves that it will lead to diabetes, heart disease and even cancer. Proof enough for me why so many surf casters die young.
A sleep deprived person at 4 am has the same mental awareness as someone who is drunk.
Eating while exhausted totally slows the metabolism and you absorb food into your system differently than if you are alert, which is the tie to diabetes..
Quite an eye opener

I'm living proof. I use to do 100 night+ a year in the surf. Never slept.
Heart attack at 49, quad bypass at 55 and cancer at 57. Fortunately I beat all of it. I sleep a lot more and fish a lot less now.

the reason is lack of REM sleep
not duration
during rem sleep (rapid eye movement sleep)
your heart pumps ,you breathe , and your eyes
zip around in the dream state where and when your
needed chemicals are manufactured by the brain.
it typically takes 4 hours to eventually get into rem sleep
but you can shorten that to 45 minutes with practice.

Please don't tell my wife! She already has enough ammunition to keep me from fishing. I got cornered by a bear 2 nights ago by the little pond at the end of my street. I was 30 minutes late cuz I couldn't scare the thing away from my only exit back to the house.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. I don't think there is any doubt there is a correlation between hard fishing and early death, especially if you factor in all the new energy drinks, cigs if you smoke them, and sleep deprivation. Not a healthy combination right there.
I do drink plenty of water, though!

I see a lot of guys in the game who are my age and they really take the saying, "I'll sleep when I'm dead" to heart. Well, some of these guys might not be fishing very long at the rate they're going (no pun intended in those last two sentences). I get it, though. I think we all go through that stage. Chit, I fished 30 hrs straight on the Cape earlier in the week when I originally planned on fishing one tide! Did NOT feel well after that. "It'll getcha!"

There is also the saying "I'm not here for a long time. I'm here for a good time".

there's this nutty professor type guy in Japan
he dives into his pool and doesn't let himself surface
until he gets a really good idea or invention.
sounds Kooky ... i'd have to agree....
fact is .........he has lots of inventions
one of which is this special sleep recliner
that gives you eight hours sleep in four hours.
