Home Wifi Router Service Life

How long do people usually get from a typical Wifi router? I've found after 3 years or so they start dropping signal more frequently until you replace them.

Is this common?

I heard it is and that's been my experience, in fact my latest is going on 2 yrs. and it's starting to act squirrelly,,,
Had a Comcast guy in the house recently and he says the best on the market is the Apple router,,, long range and simple Simon set up....

I put mine on a timer. Turns on at 5 am and turns off at midnight. The logic is it will save some of its life.
