Party on
There are some cool angling opportunities in and around San Diego. I have done two party boat trips while visiting my brother who lives out there. Here is a little write-up about the more recent one, bottom fishing on the La Jolla kelp beds: https://kierran.blogspot.com/2012/01...-dreaming.html

The surf species are mostly small. I used to target halibut mostly.
Luckycraft flashminnow 110s and a steelhead rod.
From th kayak or boat you get into som larger critters.
Bloodydecks is a resource to check for kayak and boating options
bdoutdoors.com
scsurffishing.com for surf.
Most of those guys are pretty friendly and i bet some would offer to get you on fish if you introduced yourself.
Its been over a decade since i have been out there. Not sure if they remember me but i could try to put you in touch with guys who might be able to give local advise.

if you have access to the Marine base there you can rent a small skiff for cheap, swing by the bait barge get a scoop of herring minnows and fish for halibut near the mouth of the bay right in front of the submarine base. Nice big halibut right there in the bay from a small 12 foot 2 person skiff with a small outboard. Used to love that area. We used to fish for tiger shark off the beach at the submarine base at night. Grilled up shark fillets back at the barracks on base were awesome. other than halibut and tiger shark wasnt a lot of big fish to catch there. There are tons of party boats that do the same thing, swing by the bait barge (cant miss it for the 10,000 birds circling) grab bait and then drift the channel for halibut.

Guppy if looking for some good eats last time I was there anchored up off Coronado our launch boat dropped up at a dock among all the marinas.
There was a place I think called Fiddlers Green that had a great Prime Rib sandwich, holy crap.....still thinking about that. And that was 2013.

You should have told me you were going. My last job was HQed in San Fran with an office in Larkspur and Novato. You could have gone and fished the Richardson Bridge for stripers.

When I was working one company we represented was in Mexico, get into San Diego and take a cab to the Coronado golf course before heading to the hotel, 18 holes there even with rental clubs was short money and a nice change. Unfortunately I never had enough down time for fishing, but the weather was so nice.
