McConnell's push for a sham trial with no witnesses is also deeply revealing.
It shows that Republicans know they can't risk testimony from witnesses called by Democrats, because that would heighten the political price of acquitting Floridaman

Odds he debates are almost nil. Not because would come off badly, the true state of his decline revealed, but because he is no longer working in the frame of the democratic process. It is beneath an authoritarian to subject himself to a debate, Putin and Orbán skipped them too.

Now when it looks like they will likely have their chance in a senate trial, Mitch has already passed the verdict and will likely not call witnesses. But the fact that they will all have to swear in front of a judge ”I solemnly swear (or affirm) that in all things appertaining to the trial of ____, now pending, I will do impartial justice according to the Constitution and laws, so help me God.” So all you good Christians believe that they can all with a good conscience take that oath and then just rubber stamp Trumps will to move on to the elections. |
