West Bay fishing spots

Hello everyone!

I am new to the Rhode Island Fishing scene...(just moved here from Mass to work at RISD in Providence.) I don't own a boat and fish strictly from shore. I was wondering if anyone had any input as to local hotspots near the Edgewood area in Cranston. Last week I took a short trip to Conimicut Point in Warwick and was confused by the layout...couldn't figure out quite where to fish. The left side seemed too calm and protected for any action and the right side looked too shallow. I am used to fishing from rocks and jetties/breakwalls for tog, stripers and blues. I have heard oakland beach and Rocky Point might be good spots to try. Any input would be appreciated. I want to sling some eels at night sometime soon.

You are going to love fishing Rhody!!! I have done limited fishing in Warwaick so I'm going to let #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& respond with more detail around there but I will say how close you are to great spots... Narragansett, Point Judith are just a hop away, plenty of places to fish!! Many of the southern beaches are great fishing. If you can stand the crowds, there are the breachways of South County and Watch Hill.

Welcome to rhode island!!

The first spot to go and try for a biggie near you is port edgewood marina,There is exelent fishing there at night with fresh chunks and some big fish come out of there the first two weeks of june.Its right next to johnson & whales school.Conimicut is exelent with plugs and where you want to fish is off the sandbar on a droping tide fish the ocean side (facing south) use popers in the daytime and eels at night.This place can realy stack up with fish on a northeast wind.When you pull into the parking lot,look straight out and you will see the bar off the spit of sand,youll be looking right at the lighthouse.

Rocky point is another great spot to fish and is famous for big "tog" the area is very rocky and has great structure,Ity is also goos for bass and bluefish.

Once the bay warms up however,its time to head south and fish the open ocean and there are just to many great spots to list!! Once the fall rolls around the bay is again alive with huge blues and tons of schoolie bass.

You are definatly in a good area,and with a little scouting and trial and era,you should have no problem finding fish.There are so many good spots that the most difficult thing to do is decide which one to fish on a given tide !!

Sounds like I've got some big fish right at my back door.(I knew I moved here for a reason.) Just one followup question: When fishing Conimicut does one actually wade out along the sandbar between the point and the lighthouse and fish from there? When I was there last week it seemed like there was quite a current along the bar and one could easily get swept out...

Anyway, I'm going to give the Edgewood Marina a try soon (maybe tonight). I can literally walk there from my house. Whoohooo! I like to fish for toggies as well so maybe I'll try Rocky Point. I'll post my reports when I get back.

P.S. I make documentary films, so no actors are needed. I have, however, been researching a film I want to make on fishing wisdom and culture called "Hey, nice Bass!"

Gaspee Fisherman, maybe we'll run into you down there at some point. Me and da wife are looking to close on our new house in Warwick at the end of July <img src="/Images/biggrin.gif"><!--e7--> so there will be more transients from Mass in that area... But I fish there a fair amount and it is sweet...
