Think Squid

Striped Bass on Salty's Fathead

I have been learning this spot for the last 5 years. It has all of the characteristics of a perfect spot. Rock outcropping to the north, deep bowl in the middle w/shallow flat, boulder field to the south closing the bowl and steep deep-water ledges in close proximity.

Saturday May 12th the tide was halfway through the drop and the fish were rolling on top. Not small fish popping, these were big fish putting on a feedbag. I changed my 2 oz bucktail to a SaltyBugger FATHEAD and took a cast into the foray. Rod tip up and started walking the dog at varying speeds. Big swirl, plug gets tossed in the air and hits w/ a splash, twitch, twitch and I was on. Nice bass around 15lbs puking up squid boat side. Quick release and made another cast, plug hits the water and the glass surface turns into a sea of swirls. Again the plug is airborne and falls to the surface, twitch, quick few turns on the reel and bang. As I set the hook, the bass did a surface headshake and a violent roll. Line started peeling off at a steady pace, then she came up again and splashed/rolled on top. I saw the head and shoulders and thought the fish was well into the 30# range. A few minutes later she was boat side, grabbed the bass by the gill and she was in the boat. Man, what a short fat fish. Head, shoulders and a broom tail of a 40+ inch fish.

The next hour I managed a few more high teen fish until they headed to deeper water. I think it is going to be a very good year!
