Gorilla Gripper vs Boga Grip
I know a lot of members here use Boga Grip.
Does anyone use the Gorilla Gripper?
I am curious how they compare.
From a price point, there is big difference.
But, I wonder if there is a corresponding "quality" difference?
Feedback welcome.

I used a field and stream knock off for three seasons with no issues, always dunked and almost never rinsed, just a shot of wd40 here and there.
Weighs 6oz less than a boga 30 and was under 20 bucks, it served me well.
No scale but works great.

I won a rapala sure grip at TFCTFN on a raffle. Cheaper than a boga and weighs right on. Will not buy a boga but will buy another rapala.

my friends and I on the cape use these fish grippers. they curl underneath the lower lip of the fish, do 0 damage, made of floating plastic. mines glow in the dark. thing is great.

JS - That is what I use. I had the glow in the dark one but it was starting to distract me so I spray painted it black yesterday. Haven't taken out the boga since I got it.

Id go for the boga if you are into weighing your fish. If you don't really care and want something to handle smaller fish and blues get the plastic lipper. Both are great tools but both can also be a huge pain if you are fumbling around trying to get the tool off your belt to lip a fish in the wash, (that's if you are using them to land fish) never mind the boga grip death roll.

The death roll sucks. Thats why I left my 60lb boga at the canal earlier this year . After using Johnny Sax's $15 lipper I won't think of getting another boga. That plastic thing rocks.

Actually the smaller fish are a pain to get on the gripper cuz of their small mouths. the bigger the fish the more you appreciate it becuase when you secure the device on the fishes lip, you have total control and have no problem when they give you that last powerful thrash as they feel something touch them. it really cuts down the time the fish is out of the water by a lot ive found as well. dehooking is wicked easy once you secure it. the schoolies i just grab

another vote for the plastic gripper, the thing is great when trying to land a fish with a mouth full of trebles...
also great for blues...
since the jury is out on weighing fish with a boga if you really want to know the weight, just measure the girth and length and do the math!

Formula fish ... You waste more time and cause more damage trying to sit there and measure the fish than you would just to take 2 seconds and hang it on a boga or manley scale.

Don't think the data backs up your claim at all. Wishful thinking.

What data doesn't doesn't back up what claim? The formulas are a joke plain and simple and I'm sure others will agree.

Formulas are a joke. Except for the catch and release only guys who catch tons of 40#s every year but never scale them. I have weighed many low to mid 30# fish that have broke 40#s on the formulas.

never tried the formula thing, so I really have no idea. I can see how flubbing around with a fish and bashing it around on the rocks while trying to measure it could cause some damage though...

I am with Johnny Sax. Got one of these a while back and it works great. Especially when you are throwing plugs. Nothing worse than wrestling with a big bass in a current, in the dark with 3 sets of razor sharp trebles flying around. I have yanked too many hooks out of my body over the last few years than I want to think about. This thing is legit and it is short money.

Love the platic gripper. Especially on big fish and toothy ones. As far as the formulas go well they are good for someone in a tight but I;ve only had a couple big fish that even came close to the formula weight when on the scale.Mostly it leaves out whats in the belly or not that gives the girth its real weight.

Curious what the "boga death roll" is? The jaws on mine rotate when the fish goes into a spin while weighing, never had a single issue with it.
I bought a boga thirty before the start of last season. I consider it one of my favorite purchases in surfcasting. Built like a tank, great to get a quick weight, and invaluable for the feisty smaller fish or bluefish. But I agree, the cost is significant.

The part about hanging by boga or scale does less damage than measuring with a tape. It is pretty clear that you cannot hang a big fish by the jaw without damage. If weight is that important, use a carp sling that supports the fish.

Zimmy it is common sense it can not be good for big fish, I bet driving hooks through their jaws and horsing them in against current isn't that great either. I bet laying a fish in the sand and having it flip around all over the place covered in sand, or trying to lay it on a rock in the surf while it gets smashed to hell isn't any better. I also know that if I am out on the rocks and I want to weigh fish I am certainly not going to sit there and try to measure a fish or mess around with a sling while I get pounded by waves and put myself in danger, call me selfish but if I was that concerned about killing fish I would be playing golf and not fishing. To each his own, .
