Anybody ever use Ash..

for making plugs, Ive got some chunks left from a few baseball bats I made from my grandsons for Xmass..

I've trie just about every wood out there at one time or the other, I planning on making a few darters, sealing them tight in a BLO cocktail for a day or two... just dont want to go to the bother if it's like trying to seal oak!

very similar to oak

white oak is and has been used in boatbuilding so maybe that may work but it is an open grain wood also.

I guess you can use most any wood for plugs, just depends on how long you want them to hold up to fishing.

The United States Constitution does not exist to grant you rights; those rights are inherent within you. Rather it exists to frame a limited government so that those natural rights can be exercised freely.

It's not like I dont have plenty of stock, but the mind(at least whats left of it) is always in overdrive... bigger better more! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

thanks again...

I believe that Stan Gibb's first plug was ash. Maybe Flaptail can elaborate here.

I was hoping you'd post a pic so I could say it was a "nice piece of ash" oh well... sorry for my futile attempt at humor

Humor is a good thing, especialy when the thermometer reads 5 above and there are no bass to be found...

I have enough to make a half dozen or so... I'll do one up with special paint and decal and await your comment....

I've also heard that Stan used ash for his early screw-eye plugs (poppers and darters). But I'll defer to Flap or capesams on whether it actually was the case.

I have used Ash - had some dowels that were left over from a job. Turns well and finishes OK - not a smooth as AYC. I made a few spooks from ash. I would imagine that it will absorb water easily, but so does pine. Go for it - if you have the wood there is nothing to loose.
