I believe that Stan Gibb's first plug was ash. Maybe Flaptail can elaborate here.

Humor is a good thing, especialy when the thermometer reads 5 above and there are no bass to be found...
I have enough to make a half dozen or so... I'll do one up with special paint and decal and await your comment....

I've also heard that Stan used ash for his early screw-eye plugs (poppers and darters). But I'll defer to Flap or capesams on whether it actually was the case.

I have used Ash - had some dowels that were left over from a job. Turns well and finishes OK - not a smooth as AYC. I made a few spooks from ash. I would imagine that it will absorb water easily, but so does pine. Go for it - if you have the wood there is nothing to loose.
