No mention of the 19yr old coast guard kid on a helicopter risking his life to save some moron who did not evacuate? Jim, not to read in between the lines, but I would view the ones you mentioned as doing their job, which involves them going above and beyond as part of the job description.

I would argue that your assertion, as you phrased it, does diminish somewhat the incredible acts of heroism our services members do demonstrate.

That being said, given the objectives stated in the CNN article RIJIMMY linked to, I don't think the mission being executed by the US Government really fits the profile being used to select nominees.

By this measure the military doesn't really fit. Grassroots fundraising to send our troops gifts (like body armour) is certinaly a generous behavior, but on an individual scale impacts limited people.
