$$$

I wonder what the cost per license (process, admin, mail fees ect...) actually cost the state ... I envision the state getting $10 and spending $20 on this card.

hefty fee's below for the out of state charter guys.

# Establishes annual permit fees and other service charges:

1. $10 resident and non-resident permit fee;
2. $125 resident chart vessel permit and $625 non-resident charter permit fees; and
3. $175 resident head boat permit fees and $855 non-resident head boat permit fees.

Great...add it to the commercial fees and large pelagic fees. Ridiculous.

Guys like Dom at Coastal Charters are going to get raped in this. That sucks.

I am impressed that at least they don't have a larger fee for nonresident sportfisherman. Never made sense to me for any state to do that, just cuz they can, I guess.

Good. It's about time this state started taking actions to help local businesses.

I can see your point that it helps local business by charging out of state guys more but......................these local business now have another fee to pay so it doesn't help them from that perspective at all.

I hope all this money actually goes to a good cause that will help in the long run instead of more waste.

LOL...RI is the most corrupt state in the nation. The money will be stolen, laundered, abused, and probably used for a bribe. I never understood the logic where they punish those that create jobs.

I have lived in 7 states and RI probably has the best geographic potential out of any of them yet the officials are a laughing stock outside the state. It is pathetic.

The reality is few will even buy the lic. They have no enforcement. How many times were you stopped and asked to show your lic this year?

Since there will be reciprocity with NH, RI and CT, and possibly NJ if they ever get a license in place, how many non-resident licenses would they sell anyway?

Its all how you look at it.....you could say they charge the Resident a reduced rate instead of saying they are charging the out-of-stater a higher rate.

The resident is paying taxes to the state already so they should see some kind of benefit from it.

of course I live in MA and pay Maine state taxes......but can't get a residents license up here....DOH!

The Green Police aren't asking for the Registry card because it's a Federal regulation, and there's no penalty in the law for not having one, it seems. I was told by an EPO in April that any enforcement would be "informational-only". There's also no revenue in enforcing it this year, since there was no fee to get one, and there's no fine for not having one.

Next year, I'm betting that there will be enforcement

Im happy at the cost. We knew it was coming and it could have been a hell of a lot worse. In regards to the same rate for resident and non resident i wonder if there was any influence put on the legislature by some folks in the fishing industry. I know that the scenario of them actually using some common sense and figuring that people from out of state will support the local economy more if they didn't get raped on the cost of a license, is kind of far fetched.

Everything is better on the rocks.

I think you got that backwards. MA is raping the out of state charters at $625 of an out of state fee.

Best regards,
Roger

Nothing wrong in my book with trying to protect local small businessmen. Guys who live in RI and trailer their boats here don't pay Mass excise taxes, and if they hit a RI gas station to fill their tanks, they don't pay a Mass fuel tax.

Chartering is a tough way to earn a living, and there's enough local competition to start with.

Aside from the ignorance of that statement, it was not what I was writing about. Sandman was complaining that RI raised fees when the thread and article is about MA.

Small minded parochialism and protectionism does not benefit anyone in the long run.

It's funny though guys have no problem spending 20 a piece for a plug and think nothing of buying 2-5 at a wack, or spending 600- 1000 on a reel but they cry about a 10 license

I say that all recreational sports that use a public resource in one way or another should have a fee, that includes muffy and biff want to ride the public trails in the blue hills or elsewhere on the 5000 dollar horses...
