Lot's of water but my finished basement is warm and dry.
Many New Englanders refuse to use gutters and control roof run off. If you don't have gutters you have to have perfect grading and most don't. (and even then I still prefer gutters) It is not that hard. Some sites are problems but in general pooling water around a foundation can be controlled. For the amount of damage it can cause I am amazed to see how many cheap out (that is what it is too) and don't grade properly or control water runoff. That said, this was an exceptional storm with lots of water on partially frozen turf. Some sites are just in a real bad spot and there is nothing you can do except pump, I would move if that is the case. If you have a river overflow issue..there is not much you can do. Again I would move come the dry season.

When I am not at home in the winter, I put a couple long lengths of PVC pipes on the gutter outflows and make sure the water does not come near the foundation and is heading away from the house down hill upon exit. cheap insurance.
