get a tape/book on spindle turning and you will quickly be able to make any shape you want. Learning to use a skew helps, but is a bit intimidating at first (wear eye protection).

I wear a full face shield. Home Depot for under $40. I have had plug blanks explode on the lathe and shrapnel bounce off the face shield. Good investment.

No boat, back in the suds.
