Hard to imagine getting around without gps. Back when I left freshwater tournament bass fishing behind and started launching in Scituate with my old Basstracker Tournament V-17 I I had an old Interphase depth. I'd navigate and fish a milk run of ledges from the harbor mouth to outside Cohasset harbor on compass headings and nautical mile log.

There were countless scary runs in the fog in low light, carefully watching the nautical mile log and on getting close to Cohen's Ledge (my first stop), shutting down the outboard so I could listen for the waves on the ledge and moving in by ideal when I got close. GPS certainly is easier, but I'd have the confidence to use the compass and mile log if needed.
