No you don't need that kind of capacity. If you get a decent enough comp. with a decent amount of CFM, then it should be fine with small tanks. The unit will run more often with a spray gun or constant use obviously.
I got by for years spraying laquer with an 11 gallom 2hp comp. and I still have it actually, you want it?
Now I have a 60 gallon 220 volt industrial one.
