Tuna Breaching
Fished Sunday out of a friends boat and had a great day on tog, matching my personal best with an 11 lber, which damn near pulled me out of the boat. Two very large tuna breached about 100 yards from where we were anchored up, man they were big and what a sight to see. The other site I was happy to see was albies working on the way in and I was lucky enough to hook into three and boy are they fun on light gear. Seen Tuna breach from a distance in buzzards bay on occasion, but up close and personal was cool.
My buddies friend boated a slob trigger fish and I told him two things. First you better have an extremely sharp filet knife to get through the leathery skin and be ready for one of the best eating fish around these parts sometimes.

I saw tuna breaching one September off the avenues in Gansett. 300 yards or so off shore crashing through a massive school of blues, what a site to see.

Yup, there was a year in the mid-2000's when there was a few boats who had 80W's on the boat in the fall.
About every 3 years they seem to make an appearance on the deeper blackfish grounds if the herring are thick. Usually Oct-Nov. Tautog hooked one on a spinning rod for about 15 seconds a few years back while blackfishing and floating a bait for bluefish...

Long gone are the days of pulling in horse mackerel from shore in RI, never mind tinkers...I remember the piers at the fort lined up with people filling their buckets (bamboo and extension poles, no reel needed), the mackerel were almost as tall as the bucket, no BS...we used to use scallops at the GI-bridge too, some days they wouldn't touch anything else, not squid, or even freshly caught silversides.
I remember following schools of what at the time I thought were tommy cod along the shores of CH, blitzing bait on to the rocks, I was too young to identify them?? Maybe RIRH remembers?
One of my last conversations with Crafty, he thought they were pollock? Too long ago to remember....no phones back then, no pictures, only memories now
sorry,

Way back I threw a plug into nervous water at the same time it erupted,,, the buddy I lost this spring at the helm me on the bow , the way I remember it that fish didn’t even know he was hooked with such light gear....
Bloo, nothing wrong with memories me thinks,,,
