It happened to me once. I was chumming and chunking herrings two years ago at Rockport, MA. I left my rod unattended on the pole. The bass took it into the water and I had to use my another rod to make another cast. I coincidely hooked my rod's line and found a keeper bass... And it was my first lesson and it was never to leave my rod unattended. I was 18 years old newbie.
