I was doing the braid thing, problem was that when I was retrieving my eel at a slow pace, the braid would hang up all the time. braid sinks- mono floats.

Been using braid for years with eels, no issues. Hold your rod higher.......

it depends on how large of an eel you will throw. the 1201L doesn't have the power to handle large eels. it will load nice tho. 1201m is better for typical to larger eels. also, it can turn/handle a fish easier. now, cutting the 1201L may be an option too, but i like an eel rod to be at least 10'. 1204, same deal as 1201L.

How much 20 does that Liveliner hold? I'd want at least 160 yards in most places, maybe 200 minimum in a breachway or another place with good current. I can tell you that the 560 Slammer holds about 275 yards of 40# Power Pro.
1L blanks have changed from time to time over the years. I had one of the first 120 1L blanks (and everytime I mention this, someone asks, so I'll beat it to the punch--YES, I'm sure it was a 1L and not a 1M because 1) Lami didn't make a 10' 1M at the time, and 2) I bought the blank right from Merrick Tackle when they were still in Merrick and I did read the label ). It was somewhere between today's 1L and the 1M in stiffness. It was a great eel rod for years until I got my hands on a Fisher. But I guess this doesn't help ya any, just rambling Point is, I guess, that the 1M would be a better all-around choice
Rest of it sounds OK. Some guys will tell you to use a 6/0 hook, but I caught a lot of bass for a lot of years eelin' with the 5/0 bronze Mustad.

Why the Penn Liveliner over the VS? Do you plan on switching to the baitrunner to let the fish run longer?

Yes... retrieve eel with bait runner on... bass takes eel, runs with it, click and set hook. on 2 differnt nights I had bass grab my eel and run with it for at lest 5 or 6 feet and not swallow it.

the spool says 120 yards.. and I'm down with that.. i dont think i will get spooled, although it would be great for bragging rights- it HAD to be a 50 a nice tight drag, and i shoudl be all set, unless I loose a lot of line on a snag or if a fish breaks me off.
I have a M and an L, so I will interchange the 2 depending on eel size and conditions.

I like mono for eeling too. I have a 1201L that is my eeling rod. I don't want something stiffer because I don't want to cast off any eels. I can only think of one time that I missed a hookset with an eel on my 706 and 1201L setup. I like 6/0 Gamakatsu live bait hooks. I have been using big game leaders from 50 - 80 lbs. I am going with flouro this year.
