I like mono for eeling too. I have a 1201L that is my eeling rod. I don't want something stiffer because I don't want to cast off any eels. I can only think of one time that I missed a hookset with an eel on my 706 and 1201L setup. I like 6/0 Gamakatsu live bait hooks. I have been using big game leaders from 50 - 80 lbs. I am going with flouro this year.

I'll eat my hat if you break that 1088 I beat the crap out of mine and have landed a lot of fish on it..it even survived a ride in the bed of Clammer's truck more than once....and it's been flawless.

I like the whole set up except the hook size. I would recommend 7/0 or even 8/0 94150. I think the Lami 120 1L is perfect for eeling normal shore waters. in a current like the breachways or a river you need the 1M.
I think on a spinner you want some whiplash or powerpro braid.
I don't think your success ratio has anything to do with your reel. It should improve with bigger hooks. Also , despite the slow retrieve (very slow) which can lull your senses , you have to be very , very aware and on the edge to do eels well.

That's a pretty good trick, considering it's only 10'1" long at full length
Think you mean the 136 3M

I've never been a fan of circle hooks but I gave them another shot a few nights ago, I think the key is to not set the hook, I put the rod in a sand spike with the drag set just tight enough for the fish to be able to pull it. I had perfect hook sets, corner of the lip every time.

Like my All Star 1265 with the ABU 6500 with smoothies, it can stop a 30# 6 year old in a full run with a casting weight in his hand. 35# spectron. Mustad 6/0 gets them in the roof of the mouth 80% of the time. No swivel 30# leader albrighted to main line. If I'm in current All Star 1266 with ABU7000 and 50# spectron and 40# leader....
Once I use up the 50 hooks I have I'll be interested in trying circles. Joe Lyons sparked my interest and he claims to have quite a bit of success fishing eels on 11/0 Mustad circles...

i havent caught anything with eels on my 10 ft lami and 704Z and its spooled with 30 lbs fireline. so why do you guys like to fish with mono for eels? wouldnt u miss any slightest bite?
5/0, can u show me how to eel on the canal sometimes? I suck at eeling and would like to observe your ways.

I like eels i fish them kinda weird.I hold the rod tip way high like even back behind my head held kinda loosely.when I feel the pickup i lower the tip an reel up till i feel the line tighten an set the hook.It only takes a second. In all my time fishin I only cleaned one bass wit a eel in its stomach.I believe the hit eels out of aggression then try to kill em an spit em out.wit the fast hook set i started missin alot less fish.I don't like to mix my reels up it gets confusing.so i use a 706 wit 20 or 30 fireline. the 1L is to light for me I use the 120 1M, my 10' glass rod which is nice for eels or my 11 ft arra.

I like eel fishing the Canal w/ Mono on my convench, you really don't miss many hit's cause you're drift fishing. You're line is already peeling off you're spool so when a fish pick's up youre bait you're line is comming off much faster, you're thumb should be on you're spool so you can monitor you're line speed rate. Some times you can tell when you're eels about to get picked off,it'll really goes nut's just before the fish strikes!
When Jigging the Canal you want braid there's no real strech on you line even when youre 100+ yards out you can feel everything.

I am thinking about better abrasion resistance around the rocks and on full moon nights.

Full moon nights I'll grant but I always felt flouro had less abrassion resistance
