Except for the fact that all of the Acela trains have been grounded indefinitely due to structural problems on the cars

That leaves you with regular Amtrak, and they don't run well during T-storms either---antiquated signals coming out of the east side tunnels into Sunnyside, complements of the Wrong Island Railroad.

And you definitely do not want to be driving there in any kind of bad weather

The most hassle-free way to get from Providence to NYC? Believe it or not---fly Southwest from TF Green into Islip-MacArthur, free shuttle bus to the Ronkonkoma LIRR station, and 45 minutes to midtown. Not sure what Southwest charges now, but when it was $49, you could get here cheaper and faster that way than by taking Amtrak.

The Acela ties into my last NYC trip when I actually was coming home to Boston during that last snowstorm..

I was coming from DC, we circled Boston twice, tried to land then was rerouted to LaGuardia..

Not a hotel room in the city.. Me and another guy took the cab to Penn station to catch a 3am acela... that we couldnt get on because we showed up at 11:03 and Amtrak closed at 11.

So we waited for the 6am.. (there was some adventure in the middle of finding my boss who just happened to be in NYC etc...) I got back to Penn at 5am... the 6AM acela was canceled.

There was a normal commuter rail type at 6:45 that was on so I took it... 6 excruciating hours later... I was back in Boston.. got a car home.. got to the house... It was like 20F out.. reached for my keys and realized they were on the shelf 2 feet away from me on the inside of the house..

I was not happy that day.

They have replaced the acelas with metroliners that are only about 20 minutes slower. Not as comfortable but not 6 hours either.
