The Canal is a BIG place, and when fish are feeding on top...they can be taken anywhere in that ditch...and for the bottom seekers, there are some nice alley ways and pockets down there too.. Don't get hung-up on the HR area...way OVER-RATED and POPULATED. If Canal reports had verified 50s on "every other cast", I'd rush down there ASAP! It can be a fun place to catch fish...but,,,,stay away from the crowds, some people don't get the
drift 
...funny thing is, the Canal is one of those places you could confine yourself to. It has quite a few species that venture in and out and take residence through-out the season...sorry
