It is mainly used from a boat as you drift over structure. There are easier ways to hook good quality fish, try 3 waying fresh bunker chunks....

I yo yo'd up about 20 keepers yesterday right in the middle of the commercial fleet. 14 fish were above 34" and sold. In amongst them was some of the fattest stripers I have ever seen. Two of the fish I caught were at 30 #'s or just slightly above. Didn't weigh any in re; striper cup........contest, because I agree with most everyone its not appropriate.

The weight is about eight to ten oz's and is heavier at one end. Shove the skinny end in first because the heavier end keeps the nose end on the bottom. Mouth is then stapled shut. Take a long wood pick that a teriyaki wood be served on and stick in the fishes back just behind the dorsal fish. Run toothpick up fish spine until the point is about to protrude out of the fishes back above the eyes. Take your # 1 or # 2 treble and stick in the back of the fish so the the one hook of the treble enters the fish and travels under the toothpick and just out of the fishes back.

The toothpick keeps the treble from coming out and unless a bluefish eats the striper candy the pogie should last for a good long time.

Drop bait to bottom and reel up a foot and keep dropping the bait to the bottom and pulling up, hence........yo yoing.

I'll tell you how its done but not where, ever.

Also landed the largest fluke I have ever caught. Small by many standards but 7 #'ers get my attention.

They were catchin dinosaurs though. The toughest part was getting the fish back to the cave safe, with all the t rex's and what not. I think Clammers still got a few t rex steaks in the fridge John.

There are many variations of this, it is a killer techniche. Large sinkers, a wooden scewer or metal rod and something to sew the mouth shut. And yes the Rhody boys brought it to MV

The "commercial fleet" are the boats with licences to fish for bass or anything else, they usually fish the same area, they can be any size boat. Most people just know the guys in the fleet, in the spring this year there were 15 or so of them fishing the bay all CC'S together fishing the same area.....

See today's Wall Street Journal on a complete description of Yo-Yoing. There is even a video on how to do this if you subscribe electronically. Won't be long before every numnutz in creation will be doing it and I'm sure the tackle stores will be selling Yo-Yo kits, too!

We've successfully used a technique close to this off Sandy Hook and it works like a charm. Deadly for the lazy lunker. If you use a small metal leader on the weight, you'll also prevent the blues from chomping off that piece of the rig and all you'll lose is the hook.

wow, just watched the vid.

Asking a dumb question, wouldnt it be easy to run another leader from the hook eye ring through an eye in the lead weight? That would attach the weight to the main line and wouldnt impact how it looks to a bass? Seems like a simple solution to the bass inhaling the lead and the situtation if the bunker falls off.

Could it be done with less objections if the equipment changed? how about changing the "coat hanger or wooden scewer" to a paper stick something like in a candy sucker. those things last for hours. we are fisherman and know a few knots so...sew the mouth shut with thread instead of a hog ring or staple. as for the 6-8 oz of lead use something natural that is small enough to be passed. sand could work if put directly in the belly and sewn up afterward. sounds like there are a few people looking for the easiest and fastest way not the better way to yo-yo.
I may check it out for myself some day.

There was a big article in On The Water less than a year ago with pictures, technique, and debate of it's ethics. I say if it catches God Bless! Definately need a boat though there in lies the problem.
