As an alternative to inserting the washers, I'm thinkin of rewrapping the spool altogether and filling in that gap at the spool base with the the backing. Then when wrapping on the Whiplash there will be no "canyon" for it to disappear into.

What I meant was, you could screw around with one, with impunity, knowing you had the spare laying around
