Pen size

The bigger, the better, up to a point.
You still need to leave room for your boat.
Three feet wide by three feet deep, with half inch mesh should do, but 50 Herring may be pushing it, as the water warms.

Apart from the size of the pen... the stress on the Herring from catching, handling, transporting and the water exchange at your slip, are other major factors in keeping them alive.
