Glad you had great fishing. The Block can be a true fishing bonanza or.....

It's not always like that.

2003 Early November. The Island looked like it was going to sink into the sea from the number of striper men out there. Here's a partial list:

Sea Dangles, Habs, myself, RI Rockhound, Spence, Redlite, Tony Orlando, #^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&, Steve McKenna, DZ and on and on. How many fish were caught???
#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&#^& got one about 20# and Steve Van Staal got one about 15#. That's all.

Mike V (redlite) never went back. DZ did better as he stayed for a week and found fish after we left on Sunday. Don't get me wrong, we had a blast. But the fishing sucked. I have been there when we killed big fish 81, 82. When we did just OK 96, 97. Great 99, 2000.

I think it was 2002 RI Rockhound, Spence and I fished the Friday after Thanksgiving for about 20 of 24 hours with a howling SW wind and 30 degree temps for 2 15# fish. We were parked on the bluff overlooking the SW Point (you could still drive there.) and the wind was shaking the truck.

You hit it just right and were lucky there were fish everywhere.

Let Dennis tell you stories about sleepless nights with nothing to show for it.

Thank the Gods for your good fortune.

No boat, back in the suds.

The Block Island fall paradox is that it's not very easy to hit it right, and it's very easy to have a trip that is so piss poor that you'll never want to go back. Block Island fishing is fickle business.
You have to go when conditions are favorable, and as the season progresses, those opportunities become less frequent. But when wind and bait and weather come around, it's heaven.
The fish are on their own schedule and it usually does not correspond to when it's convenient for fishermen.
