Now that TDF has lost his left leg and can no longer win, I would suggest we do the S-B Portly Angler 2010 starting on Jan 1 (jan 2 for those needing one last hurrah).
January 1 to May 1 Portly Angler Challenge 2010
My biggest issue last year was being out of shape (well, that and I generally suck as an angler) and this year I need to work on that. 'Specialy if I'm going to even think about a wetsuit .

for me.. it's all about recovery...
I re-aquaint myself with what my wife looks like..
I give my aching shoulders a chance to get semi limber again and avoid anything that aggrivates the calcium deposits that reside there...
I get some sleep.. more than 4-5 hours a night...
I allow my hands to grow skin( finger tips mainly) instead of scar tissue.
I wean myself of off of Advil (this goes in conjunction with resting my aching shoulders)
I go down in my shop and start turning plugs, making jigs and tieing flies... after a few months of this, the old yearning comes back.. and I cant wait for the start of the new season..

hitting the gym about 6 days a week. lifting 4 doing an upper / lower spit with a strength / power lifting template. Not really bulking, doing more of a recomp so i'm sacrificing some strength gain to try to stay relatively lean. I'll probably do a quick cut when i'm done with my current program then move on to either a westside template or 5-3-1. my goal would be to get to the 1000 lb club by spring, but that's pretty ambitious. hey, you asked
i do it for overall health and because i like it, not with fishing in mind. fishing is not a physical activity IMO, and any relatively healthy person my age can do it. staying in shape for the long term definately extends the time that you can stay at it though as you age.

Good luck. I got to 1100 (just belt, no other gear) when I was 23/24, but my shoulders back and knees are toast.
I just need to get back to spinning 1-2x a week once the wife goes back to the work and we get a baby schedule down!

Never work on mechanics until you have first justified buying a new more expensive rod and reel to match....probably a few more aerodynamic plugs as well.

You, spinning on one of those poles, is a visual I can REALLY do without.

Well done. I'm hitting the gym3-4X per week, mostly agility/endurance/core type stuff.
Of course there's the goodwill building w/the wife too...she gladly returns the favor every summer when my one night commando trips to remote islands with certain surf mavens takes place. She takes care of the kids while I kick the snot out of myself. It all balances out.

After bird hunting, dawn to dusk 3 days a week for the last couple of months I'm feeling like I'm in pretty good shape @ 6'-165lbs....but after seeing my bro get his arse whipped by a "little" 150 lb. tuna last year I think I'll start on the "milkshake & beers " diet to put on a few lbs. Would s*#k big time to get pulled over the gunnel after I've been bustin his balls.

thinking of ways to get Hern to get his shoulder back in shape......
Eddy and DAD - NICE JOB. every pound off your bod is like dropping 5 of carrying gear on a long walk or swim..... i speak from lengthy experience hiking, backpacking and diving...
i plan on doing some more upper body and cardio..... im still the 98 lb weakling compared to when i got sick..... and i have ZERO endurance.... a problem when ive taken up swimming to rocks to fish at night.... :-)

6" dia. Hand Ice Auger...Multiple holes for the upper body work and I still get out on the Mountain Bike at least once a week.
I applaud anyone here who really can hit the gym >3times/week.
The biggest improvement for my casting distance may come from the new blank I'm getting wrapped right now combines with AH ICBM pencils...
