On flats and even deep water I have had great success with a clouser sand eel tied with ultra hair to blend in with the bottow and just a touch of mirrabou in between the top & bottom wing.

That being said, I personally don't think stripers are smart but instead are opportunistic - I think it's not really the fly but getting it to the fish.

1. Floating line & poppers/ unweighted flies for surface feeders
2. Intermediate line & unweghted flies or clouser for cruisers
in 5 - 10' of water
3. clousers & a sinking line in current or when drifting over holes.
