if you mount the j hooks up high on the joists it may give you enough headroom

I like that green tape in the background of the second pic

I like that idea but the cealing is closed and I don't have access above the joist unless a pull the cealing down. I think the j hooks will work fine as i have a lot of headroom.

Here's my setup. It ain't pretty but it works,the rods are real easy to get in and out.

Job Lot had ladder holders that are 12" wide j-hooks. Flushmounted to the bottom of the joists; no headroom issue

10' and under are stored in a locked closet built into my false chimney.

Longer ones that I use in season are stored on J-hooks in my basement. I have an outside bulkhead that makes getting them in and out a snap.

My "inactive" stash is stored in the rafters of my shed.
