If you want some fun and not just meat fishing go with a 50W reel and a stand-up rod to match the reel. If you don't want to break the bank go with a Shimano TLD50W LRS, a bit less money than the Tiagra but good stuff.
This will cover you for medium, large and small, again small giants. Bigger than that you may still do if your good, but your getting under gunned fast.
If going this route don't forget you need a belt and harness and friends to help.
This set up will let you go play with some sharks too. Plenty of used stuff around, though get new line.

This is an expensive game. First investment should be in getting some experience on a charter or with someone who has experience on the Bank. It can get nasty out there, fast. Between safety gear, fuel, and proper set ups, you are looking at big bucks. Go with others first to see if it is for you, and your wallet. Can't emphasize this enough, especially from a safety point of view....
