I am so glad this thread got started. I had all sorts of misgivings about taking the tail hook off. My canal mentor swore that it just got in the way and he never fished a stick shad with one.
I gave it my best shot last year and I felt that my plug didn't have the right action. I am a firm believer in no trebles on the back as I think they injure more fish than they hook. I like to use a 5/0 or 6/0 Siwash which I tie with bucktail or feathers. Sometimes both. That's the way I'm going this year.

No boat, back in the suds.

Same as above with the double split ring...No back hook, got really sick of hooking fish deep or in the side of the head.
