scituate jetty scare
so i'm making the rounds this am and i hit the jetty in scituate. there was a guy who gets a borderline keeper but it gets stuck in the rocks still on the hook. it's high tide and pretty snotty, waves are breaking, and just no way to get to the fish. he takes off and i'm not far behind him. i figure i'll take a ride back in a bit when the tide goes out and see if it's still there. i hit a few more spots and double back. there is no sign of the fish but there was one other adventurous soul giving it a go. the tide was out a bit but the waves are still crashing the jetty pretty fierce. i hang a few schoolies and the guy further down ties into a decent fish. i watch him get it into the jetty and he starts climbing down the jetty to get it. right before my eyes the ocean swallows him. he's just gone. i'm stunned but snap out of it and start making my way in his direction. it seems like an eternety but get to where he was. he's hanging on to the rocks for dear life. his face is bloody and he is in trouble. i start screaming at him to hang on and he is staring at me blankly. i scurry down a few rocks and he comes to. he starts climbing up towards me and i grab him and we get to the top of the jetty and he says "my rod". i start laughing and collapse. we stumble back to the parking lot and get him cleaned up. he looks like mike tyson had his way with him but is fine. he gives me a hug before we leave and says "i owe you a beer man". he is one lucky young man and thank god it ended well.

Paul,
You risked your life to save a life of someone you didn't even know. There are not enough like you out there.

For all of you who are reminded of that time you came close
wear an autoinflate PFD on the rocks. They don't get in the way, they don't inflate unless submerged (waves do NOT inlfate them) and they will save your life and spare the ones who love you they anguish of going on without you.
They cost less than a good reel. Don't be a dead _____.
