I went with the HX851 which also has a GPS. Send a digital location in case of emergencies.

That's a good radio Eddie. Shop around though. You'll find it cheaper. Try defender.com

Don't overlook handhelds that have bluetooth capability, you can keep your phone safe and dry. If you find a couple of radios you like post or pm me the model numbers and I will see if I can find a better deal, I am certain I have more time to search than most. Being unemployed and a cheapbastard I look at the money I save from MSRP a virtual hourly pay. There is no hurry to get a radio now and there will be some great sales coming up this winter so keep looking. I am also planning a trip to NH soon and I am also looking for the right handheld/deal.

I'm thinking a radio might be a must have item if I'm going to be going out nights ,, May be safer to keep in contact with each other ..ecduzitgood !!!! that bluetooth feature .. Does that exist on a water proof radio ? sounds good to be able to call home .

Mine has a 110 volt cradle and as a back up it has a Battery pack that can use AAA batteries in case the power dies on it....never had the power die on it though, but it is a good backup feature.
I'm thinking the same thing....a must have if you are going out at night

I have a humminbird 798 ci Si for night time navigation so the bluetooth feature has peaked my interest. I don't know how useful the gps is with a handheld beyond giving your exact position for faster rescue, maybe you can use it for navigation and if so a gps radio might be a better choice unless you plan on having a chartplotter. Amazon is the lowest price so far....

You don't have to tell her or if you do, tell her it's for emergencies only to conserve the battery, then if she keeps calling you'll know for sure how she feels about you

Hold On Ed ,,, Did you read this review .. This guy actually tested that radio ,, floating it . 2 times it stopped working after getting wet...

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Cobra MR HH475 FLT VHF Waterproof Two-Way Marine Radio with Bluetooth (Electronics)
After some research I found this radio very intriguing and purchased it. It had a high rating and a must buy through a sailing web site. Being into sea kayaking it is very important that the radios we use are water proof. Having the floating feature along with the burp feature is a plus then along comes the blue tooth capability, I was sold. I couldn't wait to get my radio. First day out on the water I want to see how well it floated and check out the burp feature. Well it floated great to bad it quite working with in a minute of being dunked. I emailed and called cobra and no response I called cobra again and talked to a live person who transferred me to factory service where I left a massage. No response. I called again and found out the return procedures and sent the radio back at my expense. Now I am willing to say that not everything comes out the way it should and that I was unlucky and got a defective radio. Well two weeks later I get a new radio. What do you do when you have a problem with a product? You go test it and see if it will fail in those conditions again. Well radio number two failed at being water proof to the JIS7 rating. This radio lasted a few seconds longer then the first one. Played the phone tag game again with Cobra. This time I made them pay for shipping so I had to wait another week for the label to make it to me. Sent radio number two in and three weeks later I received radio number three. So far this radio has lived up to the JIS7 water proof rating. I like the features it has. But I am just wondering if and when it will quit on me, if it does I am requesting my money back from Cobra, three times and you are out! Cobra could have done a better job communicating and calling me back. I never got a letter of apology about two radios being bad and I had to do all the work on trying to get the radios returned only once did they call back and that was after I left a message saying that I was not impressed with their product or customer service.

I expect an occasional lemmon two in a row is pushing it but I'll have all winter to find a good one and paypal and ebay have settled disputs favorably for me. I might ask the seller to water test the radio before shipping and let them know that's what I am going to do when I get it.

Question ? I was reading this vhf protocol page and they said do not use VHF for casual conversation and suggested another type radio . Is this true ? I thought boaters always used their radios with buds to target fish ??

Yeah from what I understand as long as you are off the main channels (like 16, 13, 9) you are ok to chat with buddies. Of course, nobody talks real details on the radio. You hear a lot of "hey Joe, are you out here?" and then "yeah call my cell phone" in return, if they even respond.
Also, if you are acting dumb on any channel the CG will usually come on and tell you to knock it off. Like one time some teenagers were talking like pirates to eachother for a good 10 minutes (it was kinda funny actually) until the CG told them to get the hell off the radio.
