I'm sure Iran would rather play cat and mouse with special forces than be cleaned up with a MOP. That thing has to be a mother...
Hypersonic weapons are going to be the future. We'll launch them from geostationary orbit or moon bases and eliminate any target in 45 minutes.

Ground launch from very specific locations and flight profiles so as NOT to be confused with a ballistic nuke and not from space to prevent significant (additional) weaponization of space. You just don't know what it will look like on the other guys screen. (Though the moon base comment has me thinking there is some T.I.C. going on)

Moon bases might be a way off...
But the advantages of space based weapons over flight launched are significant once the packages get smaller. We don't need the Fifth Fleet on the same mission if we can target Africa to Asia from the same platform.
Agree weaponization of space is a slippery slope, but it's got to be coming regardless. Not that that's necessarily a good thing.

I can't believe HOW they did it. I read an article yesterday that detailed from an Iraqi general how they got to it. It's ridiculously stupidly simple.
HEADS SHOULD ROLL on who approved a NON SECURE link to control the things and why didn't they have a self destruct device (which probably wouldnt have helped here unless they blew it on the ground which is improbable.
All they did was jam the main contact frequency, then spoof the gps coordinates and terrain height. So when the drone loses signal it's auto programmed to return to base and land. Cept this time it landed in Iran.
$1 million down the effin tubes because of poor design..

Not the design that was poor...it was the security that was poor. Ain't that difficult to encrypt data on a signal

The idea of what they did exploits the fact that gps is nothing more than a rf signal that works on what's called "capture effect" in other words loudest signal wins. Blast a kilowatt of rf at the drone to put it in autopilot... and then add the gps data stream rf to it with the proper heights etc added and bingo now the drone has been jammed and the gps receiver is spoofed to Iran. Stupidly simple.
Did the US really think that no-one could figure this out? Wouldn't a standard mode of analysis of a million dollar piece of apparatus be to figure out HOW to break it so it doesn't really happen?
I live in a different world I guess that's what I'd do before I lost it. But we're talking the govt here |

You'd be surprised. I'm close friends with someone that does work on robots used by the military and *reliable* encrypted data transmission is a large problem for them. |

Not necessarily...the Drone had Encryption built in both in the control signal and the GPS signal...so if they didn't use it right then its a security issue....not a design issue.
For the control signal they just jammed the radio signal.....didn't fudge with encryption at all. Just found the frequency it was operating at and broadcast a bunch of garbage to it....which just forced it into autopilot
Its the GPS Signal that makes you scratch your head...they had to break the Encryption to change the coordinates. The US probably used a weak encryption algorithm to increase performance...and they got burned.
They had an issue before with the video feeds in these where they shut off the encryption on them to increase performance...and got burned. my guess is they probably figured they could go with a lower level encryption on the GPS signal....underestimating what Iran was capable of cracking (bet they had a little help too i.e. China, Russia)....and got burned
Its like giving somebody a plug and they take the hooks off because it will cast better...is it the plug design that is at fault because the guy isn't catching any fish with it....
Somebody's head is going to roll over this one I bet.....I think this is Human Error/Bad Judgement that caused this to happen

My guess is that is probably because of the quality of the signal, not the encrytion of the data. |

yep and you need higher level rf signal with encryption because of it's characteristic of losing range.
