So? How Is Your Fall Shaping Up?

I try to put in more time this time of the year as we all do! Its time for me to freeze enough striper so I can make my famous "Striper Chowdah" 4 or 5 times over the winter! Nothing like it on a cold, snowy winters day! Anyway....how are you finding the fishing is my question? My own experience tells me its just heating up...the next few weeks should be good! I do remember all the disappointed souls who fish the canal last Fall it seemed like the fish took the long way home around the Cape? Seems same this year?? September is over and they have not shown in great, epic numbers? I hope that changes soon.......so how are you folks doing?

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

It has been a slow and dissapointing fall up here in Maine. Haven't seen any large in quite a few weeks. Hoping for one more push of fish as some years it's decent in early October.

This will be the week we remember fondly when sitting around the hot stove this winter. I can just feel it in my nuggets.

You're married and have kids. Your nuggets should have fallen off by now. That's probably what you're feeling.

If the last two weeks are any sign of the fall run it's going to be great.

Lots of bait around, spearing, mullet and even some big pogies.

Day time blitzes for the after work bite.

Toughest part is choosing when to go. The false dawn into daybreak is getting real good while the late night bite is slowing down.

Hoping it continues to built and I'm fishing in Soco til mid/late December like in 2011

If it wasn't for numbskull my fishing would be mediocre at best so far. Hopefully this upcoming week will reverse that.

I'll let you know how it's going if I catch a fish this fall. So far 3 trips, 3 skunks. But I did catch fish in the summer.
I hope things turn around for me this week, if not, I'll have to try different places.

crappy, I only have the time to fish at night, and so far no fish in the past few weeks. I also hate the cold, so it's been harder to justify not staying in the basement and getting things ready for an all out plug war this winter with my lathe!

fished hard the past 3 days on the vineyard ... both yak daytime fishing and surfcasting at night. Decent Albie blitzs off Edgartown lighthouse every morning ... went 1 landed for 3 hookups on friday morning off the yak. Skunked off Squibby on Thursday afternoon off the yak and thursday night off Lobsterville beach. Yak fished Menemsha to Brickyard on Friday on caught. blues and 1 albie in the afternoon. walked same area at night on Friday night and found a few stripers up to 30" on lobsta darter. Yak fished sat out pof Menemsha off Gayhead and found blitzs at the point area on rainbait. A few small skiffs and me and 2-3 surfcasters had a blast for about 90 minutes catching 28-32" bass.... Plenty of blues around as well.

Nothing from the shore at dusk worth mentioning for weeks. But have only been at dusk to about 8:30 or 9pm. Boat has been poor for past five weeks, but has just begun to pick up last weekend and yesterday. Live macks. Have to chunk/chum if macks are too big to get them eating. I put the boat really tight to the rocks, and the swell and surge lately has put me close a few times. But that is where they are. Had my second largest fish of the season yesterday that I couldn't revive... Besides two small lobsters, it had a stone in its gut about 1.75 inches around! Someone once told me they will eat stones to help keep themselves lower in the water column. Any thoughts on that? Cod have shown up inshore. Got eight keepers today. Was a little dicey getting out to the Ledge in that fog this morning though....
Lobster guys are still getting eggers, so I think everything is late this year.

You should have slid closer south. Had macks all over while codfishing and good bass in the rocks before tide bottomed out. I didn't bass fish, but got the cell and radio reports.

Up until Friday night pretty slow for larger fish - but 30 minutes doesn't make the Fall. Just small bass otherwise, very few bluefish.

Last 2 weekends I concentrated on the S. Shore. Got a buddy who lives near the beach. Still and hour drive for me. Last weekend I threw everything at them, topwater, plugs, rubber, nada. For sh^ts and giggles I tossed on a white bucktail and started catching shorts. Was the only lure they'd hit (old reliable). Went back this past weekend with a few more bucktails on hand just in case. 3rd cast and I hook up with a short....as well as every other cast after that. Thinking there must be a bigger fish in the mix. Gave a bucktail to my buddy who caught an 18 lb fish within 10 casts. It was his best fish this year from shore....after being skunked 5+ times before yesterday.
I continued to catch a few more shorts, but once the sun came out the bite shut off. I kinda wished I had some clams to chunk. Might make another trip there....make a tog trip, then concentrate in So Co after that. I'll fish till Halloween then pack it in.
I was very surprised to not see any bluefish where we were.

Sadly it has been worse than dead up at the tip of the Cape, beach or boat. Bait - sand eels and mackerel- are all over the place, but no fish, either bass or blues, are under or in the bait.

Only bright spot for the last 10 days or so was at night, near one of the lighthouses up here, people getting bass up to mid-twenty pound range, but that has slowed down now. Amazingly, we could never find those fish the next day from the boat, shallow nor deep.

Still no tuna bite at Peaked Hill, although did get a report of a sighting of them over that way. Most tuna getting caught over by the SW corner.

Sooooo, just hoping and wishing that it's still going to happen, but getting a bit discouraged and not sure it will.

There has been NO NO fall run this year in Gloucester MA north or south. Ipswich bay, No fish off shore, no fish at all for the last 3 weeks ( well a few but schoolies and one or two 32" fish a day ) enjoy the fall run because the full month of September has been devoid of fish where they normally pool up for the run south... This is the saddest thing you could ever watch. The water is still 60 so maybe? but oct 18 is the late cut off point for fish in this area.

all is well!

oh? whats a bluefish? 3 all summer.

Slip..i trade my left nut for the last fall right now, as awful as it was
I'd say I am getting skunked about 80% of time in September, regardless if I try back bays, Montauk or up front
yup, that bad

Moc, you still throwing the Micah sand eel? I have one that hasn't seen any action. Just curious if it's been working this year for you?
