I screwed one of those things to the tailgate and lay the rod in the bed and clip the skinny end of the shaft in so it doesn't slid around or get scratched. works fine for me, and cheap.
LOL! We had them screwed onto the roof rack of our Explorer for 10 years. We are still using them on the tailgate of the pick up.
We have the ones with the screw lock.
